Police are investigating after group of five youths launched rockets at a synagogue in Maida Vale during the Jewish new year this weekend.
The group of hooded people were shown on CCTV launching two fireworks at Lauderdale Road synagogue just before 4pm on Sunday afternoon.
No congregants were in the building at the time of the incident and no damage was reported as a result of the attack.
Officers are now reviewing footage after the suspects had dispersed by the time officers had arrived on the scene.
The place of worship is part of the Sephardi Spanish and Portuguese community, one of Britain’s oldest, and which has prayed at the site since 1896.
Sunday was the second day of Rosh Hashanah, a festival which marks the start of the Jewish high holiday season.
A spokesperson for Met Police said: ‘At 15:56hrs on Sunday, 13 September, officers were called to reports of a group of suspects discharging fireworks at a synagogue in Ashworth Road, Westminster.
‘Officers attended the scene but the suspects had left prior to police arrival. No injuries were reported.
‘No arrests have been made and police enquiries, including CCTV analysis are progressing at pace.
‘Additional patrols are in place to help ensure Jewish communities feel safe, protected and reassured during this important religious period.
‘The Met remains committed to protecting Jewish communities and ensuring people can celebrate and worship without fear of hate crime or intimidation.
‘Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 4572/13SEP.
