Dozens of Christmas lights were seized by officers from a shop in Queensway after they were found to have light parts exposed.
More than 30 boxes of the popular festive decorations were removed from shelves at Great Value Store after the charging bases were found to have flimsy charging bases.
The items were so dangerous they could have lit up a Christmas tree in more ways than one, trading standards found.
A total of 33 light sets branded Guida and 26 travel USB adaptors were seized from the store, after testing showed they were at risk of catching fire or electrocuting their user.
Store director Abdul Hamidi admitted to five charges of offences under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
His case was adjourned and he is due to be sentenced on April 19.
Councillor Caroline Sargent said: ‘Anyone buying these Christmas decorations could find their home lit up in more ways than the obvious.
‘These lights were so badly made they exposed the user to the risk of electric shock and fire. The problem with bargains too good to be true is they are often shoddily made and unsafe, and these Christmas lights were not going to fill anyone with festive cheer.
‘Our trading standards officers will keep doing their job to ensure Westminster shoppers get safe and legal products.’
