An appeal has been launched after a woman was sexually assaulted at night in the West End last weekend.
The victim, in her 20s, was followed by a man while walking down Shaftesbury Avenue, Cambridge Circus and Drury Lane on Saturday, August 22.
She was dragged into a doorway on Macklin Street at around 5.20am when she was raped by the male suspect.
The woman was able to escape and reported the incident to police shortly thereafter. She is currently being supported by specialist officers.
Officers are now searching for the suspected rapist, with a man they want to speak to subsequently pictured on CCTV near Lisle Street in Chinatown and Drury Lane.
The suspect is described as white and aged between 25 to 35, with short dark hair.
He was shown wearing a grey hoodie with a dark gilet, casual trousers and trainers, as well as carrying a backpack.
Anyone who was in the busy area from 4.30 to 6am is urged to come forward with information.
DCI Paul Ridley said: ‘Our thoughts are with the victim who continues to demonstrate tremendous courage.
‘No woman or girl should feel unsafe on the streets of London, and we remain steadfast in our pursuit of those who commit these terrible offences. Officers continue to conduct enquiries locally and there will be increased patrols in the area.
‘We’re also appealing for the public’s help as part of our investigation. We are confident there are witnesses and that someone will recognise the man in the footage.
‘While we understand that speaking to police can be daunting, all information will be treated in the strictest confidence. No matter how insignificant you believe it to be, any information could prove crucial to the investigation.’
