Conservatives have retaken control of Westminster Council from Labour in a dramatic local election result.
Tories took a total of 32 seats out of 54, making gains in Bayswater, West End and Lancaster Gate wards, while support for Labour declined mirroring other results across the capital.
While Labour held onto seats in its traditional strongholds, the party lost hundreds of votes to the Greens in several wards including in Queen’s Park, Church Street and Harrow Road.
Westminster Council was Conservative from its inception in 1964 until 2022, when Labour defied local political gravity to seize the local authority for the first time in its history.
Although short of the Tories’ 2018 result, in which the party held nearly two thirds of seats, the result is a landmark gain for the party, which also reclaimed Wandsworth council.
Reform failed to make any gains, with their top target Abbey Road comfortably held by the Conservatives despite defectors Alan Mendoza and Damien Moore standing in the ward.
Westminster comprises of 18 wards which each elect three councillors each.
